Hi! Part of the filling fell out a few days ago from the second tooth on the right. Pain is now experienced when pressure is applied. Temperature applied to the tooth does not seem to cause any pain. I've been recommended a root canal treatment. A second professional opinion would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

It looks like someone has already started it. The arrows show the access hole made by a drill.

Root canal treatment, often referred to as a "root canal," is a dental procedure used to treat a damaged or infected tooth. During this procedure, the dentist removes the infected pulp (soft tissue inside the tooth), cleans and disinfects the inside of the tooth's root canals, and then seals the space to prevent further infection. This treatment can save a tooth that might otherwise need to be extracted and is typically done to alleviate pain and preserve the tooth's function.
