Open tooth after a root canal treatment

My dentist said that I had a dead tooth, and I needed a root canal treatment. He opened my tooth and cleaned it but said that he cannot close it yet because of an infection (at least that is what I understood). On my next appointment, next day, he just cleaned the tooth and again said it cannot be closet yet. So two days already my tooth remains open. Tomorrow is my third appointment... He also gave me antibiotics which I am taking for 2 days now. Should I worry? Is it normal for the tooth to remain open after a root canal?

Do you have a photo? It seems strange that he has put medicine inside but not sealed it - the med would simply leak out.
