Getting a retainer without braces

I am due to be getting a clear retainer, though I am unsure why. I have not had braces or any type of other orthodontic treatment, nor am i due to have any.

Do you perhaps have any missing teeth and your dentist is perhaps trying to prevent movement of your teeth? Are you also sure that you are not maybe mistaking it with a bite plate? Some dentist use retainers as bite-plates in cases of very mild bruxism.
