Root canal

So I just had a root canal. And I go back on the 30th to have a crown placed. What is the little gauze or cotton ball (teeny tiny) on the OUT side of my tooth on my gums above the tooth? Feels like just a tiny hard ball on gums. Its not any potential gauze or cotton from inside my actual tooth. But on my gums almost in-between the root canal tooth and the tooth next to it. My dentist didn't say anything about it just that the root canal can fail and he suggests a crown which is what my appointment on the 30th is for.
