Root canal or not ?

I had a molar that was damaged about 20 years ago about 1/3 of it fell off but I could still chew with it and my dentist was happy with it .
I'm now thinking of having a crown on it because it doesn't look good even though it hasn't caused a problem. My question is should I have a root canal done on it before the crown ?

Good day

It is not always necessary to do a root canal. It depends on if there is still enough tooth structure left to support the crown or not. Do you perhaps have any x-rays?
