Root canal 17 years ago

I had a root canal 20 years ago and then had the root tip removed 3 years later as the abscess had returned. Since then 17 years have passed without any problem. Only now this tooth is throbbing and has intense pressure in it but the dentist cannot see anything on the x ray. How is it possible to have pain in a dead tooth with no nerve 17 years later?
