A tooth was filled (cavity) in December. In February it turned out to need a root canal. Did the dentist miss the root canal the first time or did the filling that wasn’t done properly cause the root canal and subsequent infection? Or is it normal to have this happen?

happened to me. Two fillings back to back almost and root canals. The first one they shaved off half my tooth and it got progressively worse. 1 month later root canal. The other one was nowhere near the nerve, a normal filling that went nuts. Two months after the first another root canal. Personally I think mine were botched. Now I have a slew of dental issues since. I switched dentists and am never going back.
Totally normal for this to happen sometimes. Even if the filling was done properly, the nerve can still get irritated or infected later — especially if the cavity was deep. It doesn’t always mean something was missed or done wrong. Just one of those frustrating things that can happen with teeth.
I know in my case it doesn't really explain the other filling. Maybe one tooth should have been a root canal but the other one no way it wasn't botched.
Also didn't notice this person's post was from 2019 lol. I'm sure they probably got their root canal and then some
