So I'm pretty sure my root canal crown is too close to gums and causing extreme pain (hitting it)

Hi all, I've posted a few times. I don't really think there is anything wrong with my root canal tooth, though I will probably get a 3d. Common denominator honestly seems to be the crown. It's very close to gums and I think it's bruising them constantly and sending pain (burning and bruised pain feeling) into my jaw. What is this called? I'm not sure shaving the crown down will help because I don't think it's hitting much really but I guess I can try that. How else would this be fixed? It's driving me nuts but I'm not going to floss there for a while to help and it hurts. Extraction honestly seems very enticing at this point.

That sounds really tough — I’m sorry you’re going through it. From what you’re describing, it honestly does sound like the crown might be sitting too close to your gums and irritating the tissue. That kind of burning, bruised feeling could be due to crown impingement, where the crown is pressing too far into the gum area and causing inflammation.

Shaving it down could help if it’s a bite issue, but if the problem is how it’s sitting near or under the gumline, the fix might be more about adjusting or even replacing the crown.

It’s a good call to get a 3D scan — that’ll show if there’s anything else going on under the surface.

It hurts like a MOFO. It also would explain the pain bruised feeling radiating into my jaw. I was so desperate last night that I put vaseline on the area and felt a good amount of relief, and the jaw pain receeded! It's definitely that area in my opinion. If they can't find a solution, I will have the tooth pulled but the amount I spent on it seems ridiculous to do that. I'm sure they will shave the crown down or something even though I don't think it has anything to do with the bite.

I actually think it's not the tooth at all but I will resort to 3d just in case. It's expensive though.

Totally get that — when pain hits that level, it’s hard to think straight. That bruised, radiating jaw feeling really does sound like it’s the crown pressing into the gums. Funny enough, Vaseline easing it kind of backs that up — like it's acting as a barrier from irritation.

You're probably right that it’s not the actual tooth, but the area around it. And yeah, 3D scans are pricey, but they can at least rule things out so you're not guessing anymore. Hopefully they can adjust the crown or find a fix without having to go down the extraction road — especially after what you've spent.

Thank you. So I went back to the dentist and they said everything looks perfect and they are confused as to why I am having pain. They said margins are good and root canal looks perfect. There is no dental cement. They said there is no redness or irritation (it's true my gums only look bruised slightly). They said if crown was causing redness it would be bleeding too if it had gone too far into the gingiva. They gave me an oral sterioid which I started using (having felt any effect yet but we will see). They said if nothing happens in next few weeks, they can do a laser gum burning, which would burn off gums up to a certain point around the crown BUT it sounds expensive and painful. I read online it isn't actually painful but would that work and wanted to know what you think. I'm assuming it would be about 400 for one tooth and I could have an extraction for that or less. I am posting xray I took a picture of soon. Everything looks good on there.

Post some x-rays of the tooth.
I was able to get a picture now! Not sure if you can see. It's tooth number 4. The one next to molar. The pain is coming from gums next to that tooth feels like the crown is poking it

You can try and remove some gingival tissue with a laser and check if the pain disappears. Have you tried any antibiotics or disinfectant oral rinses? To rule out possible localized gum infection?

Yes they gave me an oral rinse which does help. It seems like warm saltwater helps too. I will say that when I brushed my teeth yesterday, I had searing pain almost like a cut near that area and I regretted even going near it. I'm not even going to floss for a while there because it hurts.

I took a few days of amoxicillin just to see what would happen and it kinda created more pressure in my face (that's kinda how it feels the area that hurts as it radiates a bruised pain to jaw etc. I've been using a dental paste they gave me which seems to localize the pain to just one area unless I stop using it. It's a steroid cream).

I'm sure I think the area could get infected for sure, but I really do think it's the constant contact with crown. I even took at look at xrays today and it looks like the exact area it near the bone even though the dentist said they didn't see anything. Is it possible for it to be rubbing up against the bone and not the gums? I highlighted the area below.

It sounds like the crown margin is irritating your gum. I’d recommend crown adjustment or replacement to relieve pressure , extraction is not necessary unless there’s deeper damage.
Dentist doesn't want to re do from what I know. They said it's "perfect". Lol. The bite isn't the problem I don't think. How would they adjust without removing crown? I was given an oral steroid cream which is working wonders but I'm afraid of what happens when I no longer use it. I'm feeling a lot better with it but it's only a 2 week use. My two weeks is up in about a week.
