How does drilling in the jawbone work?

Hi, I have a question. After a molar has been extracted how does implanting work? The molar had 2 or 3 roots so there are already holes in the jawbone. Does this mean drilling the hole means that the holes will be “adjusted” to one bigger hole? Drilling a completely new hole to put the screw in the jawbone wouldn’t make sense then right?

Usually it depends on the dimensions of the implant. Most of the time, the implant is ''drilled'' into the area with the best quantity and quality of bone. It does not necessarily mean that the implant gets placed into the ''holes'' left by one or both roots.
