Fifty years ago did dentist fill teeth preemptively?

Fifty years ago, when I was around ten years old give or take, my dentist filled all my molar and premolar teeth top and bottom with large silver fillings. It just occurred to me that it was highly unlikely I could have had that many cavities at such a young age? Was this dentist filling my teeth even though they might not have had cavities ? Is that something they did in those days ?

Children do sometimes have poor oral hygiene. It won't be possible to say if what he did was over-treatment, since it was 50 years ago, and we would need more information.
