Cavity filling

My granddaughter is suffering from dental cavities. Our family doctor suggested that we consult a dentist and fill the cavities as soon as possible. She is scared of the pain and tools. Is cavity filling a painful process ? Is there any alternative for cavity filling ? Is there any child friendly or paediatric dentistry near Ontario ?
