So I went to the dentist consistently and they kept taking new x-rays, at least 3.

In my humble opinion that is way too may x-rays.

What do you all think?

Why did he take new x-rays? Might have been from a different angle to see how many roots a tooth has or different teeth altogether.
Modern digital x-rays do not contain the same amount of harmful radiation as their historic predecessors.

The amount of radiation is quite minimal, but I would be wondering how he/she justifies the cost and benefit for you. For well-maintained patients I would take fresh bitewings (only2 xrays) every 2-3 years and an OPG every 5 years; for high-risk patients (poor hygiene, poor diet, incipient decay lesions) then once a year.
