Is it possible to get a root canal and live the rest of my life without loosing that tooth or having any problems with it? Does getting a root canal mean the tooth is basically doomed eventually?

Yes it's possible that the tooth will be ok. It depends on the state of the tooth to begin with, the skill of the endodontist, how it's looked after post-treatment etc. They would not do root canals if they did not work in the majority of cases.
