You should ask your dentist to refer you to a periodontist for a full assessment. It really depends on lifestyle factors too such as diet, smoking, drinking, exercise. Vitamin C should be in your diet and you should stop smoking if you do. You should floss and I'd recommend a good electric toothbrush rather than a manual. I've found a sonic brush to be really good for gums. Anything that improves the circulation and healing of your body will benefit your gums. But some people need regular attention from a specialist to do a deep clean and help the gums heal. Healthy gums are incredibly important so do look after them. It would take a week or two to see an improvement if you are doing the right things and don't have a more serious problem. If you don't see an improvement after 3 weeks of eating healthy foods, not smoking, flossing and good brushing technique, then ask for a specialist referral.
