Realistically how long does a cavity take to progress, on average?

Imagine a small cavity on the surface of a tooth, that's been there for around 6 months. On average, how long will it take to progress into a big cavity that can already need a larger filling that can irritate the nerve and send the tooth to endo? and how much longer to progress into an infected pulp?

I've tried asking Google but all sources give very imprecise answers such as 6 months to 5 years, so I don't doubt it can vary a lot, but I'd like to know a more precise answer, to have an idea of how quick should I treat my 6-8 cavities
