New Lump on Gum Behind Lower Molar Advice Appreciated

Hi all,

Hope you're all well, and also hopeful someone can kindly offer some advice.

I’ve developed a small lump on the gum just behind my lower molar (see photo). It’s not painful, but it wasn’t there before. I saw my dentist and hygienist just 10 days ago and was given the all clear at that time—this lump has only appeared since then.

No major symptoms—no pain, swelling, or discharge—but I’d really appreciate any insight into what this might be (e.g., mucocele, abscess, irritation?) and whether it needs attention soon.

I’m currently using PerioPlus+ Forte (CHX) mouthwash twice daily. I'm hoping it's just some trauma from hygienist and it'll resolve, but I had a quick Google and there's some horror stories about abscess etc.

Thanks in advance for your help!

This is a draining sinus of an abscess. It is not a mucocele. The reason you are not experiencing pain, is because there is no pressure build up due to it draining. As soon as the opening gets blocked, you will experience pain. Go back to your dentist and let them take an x-ray of your molars. Most likely they will find an abscess.

Hey, The lump could be a mucocele or irritation from your recent cleaning. Since there's no pain or swelling, it likely is not an abscess. Keep an eye on it, and if it does not change or causes discomfort, visit your dentist.

Thank you, much appreciated. I've just called to book and back next week. I have my fingers crossed the pain doesn't come before I can get in...
