What is the mechanism behind pocket reduction after scale and polish?
I know there is repair by forming the long junctional epithelium. But how the pocket is reduced? What is the process?
Thank you!

After scaling and root planing, the expectation is for inflammation to go down and re-establish connective tissue and junctional epithelium reattachment. From my observations, I don't see much reattachment but more reduction of inflammation and subsequent gingival recession. From many peer-reviewed articles, there has been a lack of consistent evidence that reattachment occurs especially in deeper pockets greater than 5 mm. Perhaps isolated cases see some reattachment but failed to provide general consensus.
