Over time I've had several, leaving the office they feel sharp. Over time they feel smoother. Normal for the material it's made with?

It could also be that the dentist did not polish them enough. Usually fillings should not feel sharp when you leave the office. I always ask my patients to evaluate any sharp edges before they leave, so that I can polish the filling if needed.

Patients can also become acutely aware of something different in their mouth once the numbness wears off; if it's not truly sharp, then they adapt to the feeling. The material does not smooth down over time.

I used to get so distracted by that "scratchy" sensation on a new filling that I'd find myself constantly checking it with my tongue, but I eventually learned it’s usually just tiny excess particles or slight edges that naturally wear down as you eat and speak. It's quite common for the restorative material to feel a bit high or sharp initially, and just like waiting for surgery to smooth out gum issues, giving your mouth a few days to adjust often resolves that "foreign" feeling.
