The first tooth where I had with this problem (sensitivity after an extensive filling), the dentist told me right away that I would need a RCT sooner or latter, and so offered to do it right away. I refused because back then I believed disproven theories about root canals (that they cause systemic inflammation). So after 5 years, I start getting scared (since they had told me that this tooth would surely start hurting a lot sooner or later), and went for a root canal. They did the cold test first, where the pain took some 10 seconds to pass, indicating a non-vital pulp, therefore needing root canal. I was still not to keen on it though, so I let it go another 6 months. Then I got the root canal, and it seems the inflammation wasn't even that bad since the anesthesia worked right away, without me taking any analgesics beforehand (which raise the odds of anesthesia working).
Is this a normal time frame for irreversible pulpitis after fillings to develop, 5 years? If not more actually, since I didn't have any pain still, just sensitivity.
What's the most common time scale, in your experience as a dentist?
