What on earth is wrong with my tooth (nerve pain)?

Last year, I had a leaking filling, so I went to the dentist and she filled it in (with a white filling this time). The molar opposite had had a filling at the same time, so she offered to redo that one, too. I said yes and the last 11 months have been hell.
  1. The tooth became hypersensitive, and I was unable to use mouthwash, drink cold drinks, or eat cold foods on it.
  2. I also had to have a retainer remade because the filling meant my old one didn't fit.
  3. They then refilled the filling and it turns out that they pushed it into a nerve, so they recommended a pulp cap (indirect).
  4. I had that done, and 6 days later, I have been in constant jaw and tooth pain. When they did the X-Ray afterwards, there was no decay or damage to the tooth, and they couldn't explain what the problem was, except for the fact that the filling had been touching a nerve. I'm now waiting for an emergency appointment, and have been told that I will likely need a root canal. I'm very distressed by this, as the tooth had been completely healthy, and then it has been a downward spiral of constant pain for the last year of my life.
Does anyone have a clue what this is, and is a root canal really my only option now?

I think I'd get another opinion. Something is obviously wrong. Sorry you are having this problem!

Thanks. Do you have any ideas as to what it could be? I got a second opinion when I was having the X-Rays, and I've seen 2 dentists at my current place, and they just are saying that they can't explain it.

I don't have any idea because I'm not a dentist. I think I would go see a specialist such as a periodontist or endodontist. Time to call in other experts, IMO.

Best of luck. tooth pain can be a sign of infection or other things. need to find out the cause. Tooth pain like that can be unbearable and no one needs to be dealing with that! Let us know what you find out.

Where are you located? In the US, the endodontist does not do direct pulp cap. They only do root canals. How are they not able to explain? There are numerous tests they could do such as percussion, palpation, cold test, mobility, perio probe, occlusion, and tooth sleuth.
