Unnecessary Procedure?

My dentist referred my to an endodontist, who performed a painless root canal and then drilled a hole in a molar into which he inserted a plastic post before returning me to my regular dentist. The regular dentist replaced it with a steel post and sealed the hole. Isn't that unnecessary work? How do I know I even needed a post to begin with?

Usually a post is put into a root canal treated tooth if there is not enough tooth structure left to support a filling or crown.
Do you have an x-ray of your tooth?

The endodontist may have placed a temporary plastic post to make it easier for the general dentist to place a metal post. This way the endodontist makes sure that the general dentist doesn't take away too much of the root filling, plus minimises the risk of post hole perforation by the general dentist. I always ask my endodontist to place the post hole.
