Temporary filling vs permanent filling vs root canal

• Can a temporary filling be replaced with a permanent filling without root canal when if the tooth does not hurt?
  
  
• Is there a difference between a temporary filling and a permanent filling? My aunt said that her temporary filling lasted for more than three years without root canal. Can the temporary filling last or be replaced by a permanent filling instead of having a root canal ?
