My general health (dental and otherwise) is good. I have all 4 third molars erupted and in place. I have had no real problems - I am now 45 yrs.

About a month ago, I noticed a hard bump in the lower jaw gum about .5 cm below the 3rd molar on the lingual side. The gum eventually sloughed off. Still no pain or discomfort. After about 3 wks, a very small bony flake came out of the gum. The gum was fairly healed underneath. I have seen my dentist about this. He said this was a common occurance after extraction, but I have had no extractions. I am very concerned as to why a piece of bone or something suddenly made its way out. The area was x-rayed during this time period and I guess it didn't show anything. Is my jaw bone eroding? Why? I am on no meds that could have caused this. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

thanks
