Hello

My six year son has the early signs of tooth decay on his adult molars.

We brush his teeth twice a day, he only drinks water, eats the occasional small bar of chocolate and we have never allowed him to have sweets, yet his tooth enamel looks to be softening and it is getting worse.

We have always taken care of his teeth, from being a baby and avoided giving him juice and sweets for this very reason.

I really am at a loss and our dentist was zero help, she just said "he has tooth decay", told me to brush his teeth regularly etc and then proceeded to talk over me when I tried to explain that we already do all that. She just seemed more interested in getting us out of the room. I am really worried that he may have some kind of underlying problem.

I should point out that he is Autistic, so mouthwashes and flossing are just impossible at this stage, I've only just stopped him from swallowing the toothpaste.

you mentioned that he drinks only water and has limited sweets, it’s important to consider other dietary elements. Foods high in carbohydrates (even healthy ones) can contribute to tooth decay if they are sticky or remain on the teeth for extended periods.
Fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel and prevent decay. Ensure that he is receiving adequate fluoride through toothpaste or possibly through professional treatments from a dentist.
Seek out a pediatric dentist who specializes in treating children with special needs. They may have more experience with cases like your son’s and can provide tailored advice.
Keep track of any changes in his dental health after implementing these strategies. Regular follow-ups with the dentist will be essential in managing his condition effectively.

Maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial, understanding the broader context including dietary habits, potential health issues, and specialized care is equally important in addressing your son’s tooth decay concerns effectively.

Do you have x-rays or photos that you can share in order to confirm the presence of decayed teeth?
