Root Canal with bad/dead tooth

Been to visit dentist today and she said the tooth is dead, however on inspection it looks fine and healthy, it is however sensitive to cold (but not sugar or hot). she says a extraction is necessary. is this really the case or can one opt for a Root Canal treatment instead with a dead tooth?

The affected tooth is the 5th on the right
