Root Canal When Not Needed

Hi,

Someone I know just had a root canal but it was on a perfectly fine tooth. They had a tooth which was causing them grief but the dentist did the root canal on the WRONG tooth. The dentist asked the someone I know what tooth it was and he said he though it was tooth A when it was actually tooth B.

The dentist did not check his records of which tooth it actually was and when ahead and did it on the healthy tooth A.

How bad is it to have root canal on a healthy tooth? Is root canal really that bad? The person is really devastated to have root canal done on a healthy tooth and I was just wondering how bad it is.

Thanks.
