Post with crown?

I keep reading that posts are only necessary when there is not enough tooth structure to hold a crown and that it can weaken the tooth so should only be used when needed. But I have had three root canals with teeth that were entirely intact before prepping except for the fillings, and the dentists insisted on placing a post regardless. Why would they do that?

Given your situation, your dentists likely believed that the benefits of placing posts (e.g., added retention, reduced fracture risk) outweighed the potential risks. They may have considered factors such as: The size and location of the fillings. he amount of remaining tooth structure. The forces the teeth would be subjected to during chewing. While posts are not always necessary, they can be a valuable tool in certain situations to improve the longevity and stability of root canal-treated teeth. Your dentists likely had specific reasons for recommending posts in your case, but it’s always a good idea to ask questions and understand the rationale behind their decisions.
