Porcelain veneers or crowns?

Hey! One of my friends need help as her teeth look dull and uneven. She is very much conscious about it and stopped smiling in public as many of her friends made fun of her. She lives in Toronto and she is planning to consult Dr. Jennifer in City Oasis Dental clinic. She is eagerly waiting for her initial consultation which is scheduled on 9th of March. Which will help her -porcelain veneers or crowns? When does a dentist suggest crowns and when do they recommend veneers?

It depends, for instance the teeth has been damaged with crack, dental crowns would be more applicable since the teeth can still be saved through this procedure. And for veneers if you have misaligned teeth and also damaged teeth that would the best solution. But it will still depends on the case of your teeth. Maybe your dentist will do first an x-ray. Crowns & Veneers each have their own distinct benefits. Since each person is unique, it would be impossible to say if one is better then other, without first doing a proper assessment and reviewing x-rays ect. Nevertheless, here is high-level summary that might help you better understand the differences between the two.

Crowns: Are typically used when both strength and esthetics are required. A Crown covers the entire surface of the tooth and can improve the colour, size, shape and overall appearance of one or several teeth. Due to their beauty, strength & convenience, Crowns are often times the most popular treatment option.

Veneers: Are a thin shell of porcelain bonded onto a tooth to improve its size, shape and colour. Veneers can correct gaps, crowding, stains & crooked teeth. Although not as durable as a Crown, Veneers are also a popular treatment option.

Since you mentioned that her primary concerns were that her teeth are dull & uneven, she may wish to consider having an Enamelplasty. Also referred to as Enamel Recontouring, this procedure involves removing small portions of enamel to improve a tooth’s overall shape and appearance. Combine it with a in-office whitening solution, and this could enhance her smile at a fraction of the cost.

   A crown encases the entire tooth, a veneer just its front side. A fundamental difference between veneers and crowns is how much of the tooth they cover over. Veneers only cover over a tooth's front surface (the side that shows when the person smiles). But it is best to visit your dentist as after examining your dental condition he will suggest you the best treatment possible.

If you are looking at improving the color, alignment and shape of your front t teeth, veneers are the best options. Crowns are not advised for vital front teeth as they require unnecessary excess grinding of tooth structure. Therefore, your best bet is to have dental veneers done rather than porcelain crowns, since the veneer procedure is less invasive, meaning less tooth structure is required to be removed from your natural teeth, and they will last you longer due to preservation of your teeth, however unfortunately I have seen many patients that thought they got veneers, but they actually got crowns, due to over preparation of teeth by their dentist. You can always go from a veneer to a dental crown if need be, however if you do have a crown, you cannot get veneers!!

However, crowns are a very reliable solution to both cosmetic and restorative issues. Not only can they cover severely discolored, misaligned, or chipped teeth, they support and protect already damaged teeth.

Neither crowns nor veneers can serve as a solution for weak or unhealthy teeth. If a tooth is badly damaged, it may not be able to support either restoration. For both crowns and veneers, the ideal candidate should have good overall oral health. Any underlying gum disease or decay must be treated prior to placement of the crown or veneer.

Dental crowns would be more applicable when you have chipped or broken teeth. Crowns can still save your natural teeth. Veneers are effective in treating misaligned teeth, Teeth having gaps and also damaged teeth. A dental X-ray can better define which treatment is required for particular case.
