Because when a cavity reaches the nerve, it's also incredibly painful, and medication usually doesn't work, but there are two things that work wonders: cold water and clove oil. However, since the mechanism is different in non-infectious pulpitis, I don't know if these two things will work (for example, there's no hole/cavity in the tooth through which clove oil can reach the nerve and numb it).
