My father (60) has had 8 root canals for 8 teeth in the last 7-8 years. He has type 2 diabetes and is a vegetarian.

Is there any genetic / dietary cause for tooth decay that could be corrected ?

Dental decay results from the demineralisation of tooth structure by bacteria. Though there are few genetic reasons contributing to dental caries, like amelogenesis imperfecta, its mostly due to environmental factors and mainly bad oral hygiene.

In diabetic patients, the decreased saliva secretion can promote dental decay as natural cleansing by the saliva is reduced.

Dietary recommendation to check dental decay would be by reducing the frequency of sugar intake or minimizing snacking (more important than the amount of sugar consumed).
