so i have just received my custom fitted lower mouthguard to protect my cheeks from irritation and biting which started 20 months ago after a fall I had to the front of my face my cheeks are always sore and painful. i have tried my mouthguard today, and my cheek still getting caught and little bleeding. so i would like to know how long should it take to improve and should it be adjusted. also would like to know if upper mouthguard would help please as i have a slight vocals tics which is causing jaw movement

Usually it takes about a month for it to make a difference. This is what I usually advise my patients, based on similar advice given by a prosthodontist.

You can try and take a muscle relaxant with some anti-inflammatories at night before bed. The combination usually work really well. You don't need to take it chronically-only when the symptoms are really bad.
