Hello!
The core issue: uneven screw set up on custom MARPE. My ortho realized mid installation she couldn’t fit all 3 screws on the right side because the holes overlapped. It's built with three screw holes on the left and right sides. But because of this, left side has the 3 screws, right side only has 2 screws in. Her response- "we can only fit what we can." Doesn't sound right to me.
My question: does the uneven screws compromise the appliance?
In my mind, it does. She keeps telling me it doesn’t, but I'm not convinced. Mechanically it makes sense that the side with 2 screws (the right side) would absorb more pressure because it’s the path of least resistance. She says no.
Also, this is a custom MARPE and I’m not an ortho but I imagine this could have been avoided. This appliance is built to work in a specific way. If you take one piece out of it, it alters the way it works.
Two weeks in, I felt intense pressure on the right side of my skull and not my left side. I also have jaw and neck pain on my right side (comes and goes). I messaged her saying that I was concerned the expansion was happening unevenly. She said it’s ok, to keep turning, and she will see me at my next appointment.
Sunday night, I went to turn and I felt/heard a huge pop. The right side of the screw in the center popped out. The same side as the 2 screws. Because…. It’s the weaker point so more pressure goes there! Right? Then, intense soreness along my right teeth.
She said to hold off on turning for 2 weeks to see if my palate splits.
Please, any thoughts would be so helpful. I’m not convinced that this is okay.
