Hello
I sadly battled periodontal disease from the age of 10, lost two front teeth (one upper and one lower), this was more to do with poor diabetes (T1D) management, and I was given dentures to wear but it snapped on multiple occasions so it meant my teeth shifted inwards.
I was seen by a hygienist and periodontist from 2004-2013. I was declined for orthodontic treatment within that time too, which is understandable because of bone loss etc. But young me was depressed and bullied by other school kids because of my false teeth.
Around 2012, my periodontist asked what was wrong because he noticed I was very unhappy - I mean who enjoys getting root planning, right? I mentioned I was being teased horribly by other kids, and my bite has changed. He went to seek an opinion from an orthodontist, and I was given an opportunity to get my teeth straightened, open up the gaps for bridges, and corrected.
Overjoyed, and delighted. Throughout that journey, one orthodontist suggested elastics to address the way my front teeth shifted, but she left so I was under the care of another orthodontist who was a bit more stern, and she didn’t address that, and said my braces needed to come off.
So I was left with a mild overjet and upper winged bridge was permanently bonded (the lower one is not) which dentists have said it’s fine.
I’ve been embarrassed by my teeth for as long as I can remember.
Fast forward to the present moment, I suffered an infection in lower molar 6, I didn’t opt for RTC and went for an extraction. I’m doing better now, and bone is still filling in. My current dentist is very happy with the progress, gum disease is at bay, I attend my cleanings every 3-4 months, and he has surprisingly offered to do an implant - for years I thought periodontal disease was a strict no.
My concern now is the mild overjet, the eruption of upper molar 6, the lip incompetence, and my mouth breathing. Now I didn’t get any teeth removed when I had braces, there was zero discussion, and I guess why remove perfectly good teeth, right?
I believe my ever so mild overjet is what is causing the lip incompetence, and when I close my lips fully, there’s some straining of my chin to do so but I’m finding myself mouth breathing.
So before I go down another permanent route of getting an implant, could an orthodontist address my concerns? I feel Botox is just a temporary solution and it doesn’t help me with mouth breathing, and I really don’t want to lose more teeth, in this case the upper molar 6.
My diabetes and periodontal disease are both well managed.
