Infection after root canal

I had a root canal 6 days ago, however I had some pain starting one day after it was done. Went back to the dentist and he said I have an infection. I started taking amoxicillin 4 days ago but the pain was getting worse everyday. I have started taking Metronidazole today together with the amoxicillin. Pain killers are not really working anymore. How long does the metronidazole usually take to start working?
