How do you choose a dentist?

I need to find a new dentist where I live which is Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, NY.

Is there a big difference in skill level between dentists?

Whenever I visit a new dentist I get the impression they are attempting to overdue the amount of work i need to get done. How do you determine whether they are overdoing it?
