Hi, so last monday i had root canal treatment that night i had immense pain in the night which i thought was due to the root canal bit, but next day the pain was getting worse and my mouth swollen i can feel a large abscess across my top lip which is affectin my right side of the nose for breathing too(congested) . I have been taking 2 courses of antibiotics(amoxicillin, metronidazole) since thursday and my mouth is still really swollen, though the pain has got slightly better. My dentist doesnt seem to be suggesting any other than taking antibiotics, am i right in thinking that antibiotics alone isnt going to fix this and the abscess will need draining? Also is this caused by the dentist not doing the root canal very good? I am worried about retreatment with the same dentist now.

It sounds like you need to go back to the dentist, so that the tooth can be irrigated further. Sometimes the abscess can be drained through the opening in the tooth. It is important to rule out any problems on adjacent teeth as well. If the abscess is large and can't be drained through the tooth, then an incision might be required.
