Hi. I’ve been having pain for quite a while in my upper front 2 teeth.
This week I’ve noticed that I can put my fingernail up past my gum line like underneath the gums. Could this be the cause of my pain?

Thanks

That sounds concerning. If you're able to insert your fingernail past your gumline between your upper front teeth, it could indicate a deep pocket, gum recession, or even a periodontal issue like advanced bone loss. This might be contributing to your pain, especially if there's infection, inflammation, or mobility in those teeth.

Since it's been hurting for a while, I'd strongly recommend seeing a dentist soon to check for things like a deep periodontal pocket, abscess, or even a root fracture. Have you noticed any swelling, pus, or mobility in those teeth? Also, have you had any history of trauma to the area? It's hard to tell according to your description.

Thanks for your reply. Been checked by a few dentists last year and they couldn’t seem to find anything . None of them checked my gums though. I only came across it as I was rubbing some sensitive toothpaste on it the over night and I thought no that’s not normal. I’m on a lot of pain meds for it too which don’t seem to be working . No no trauma has happened . I always thought my gums above my teeth were swollen but a dentist said no. They don’t bleed when I brush but I read somewhere that with gum disease they don’t always bleed.

Does this look like any bone loss?

From the image, there does appear to be some loss of bone height around the root apex, but it’s hard to give a definitive diagnosis without a full clinical and radiographic evaluation. A CBCT scan or periodontal probing by a specialist could provide more insights.
Given that multiple dentists have checked before without finding an issue, I’d strongly recommend a visit to a periodontist or endodontist for further evaluation, especially since pain meds aren’t helping. Have you had a pulp vitality test or probing done in that area?
