Do I really need to spend 400.00 on a grind guard or should I just take a chance that a sports mouth guard will help as it seems they are only about 40.00 ? Thoughts please thank you

If you have a severe grinding or bruxism issue, you will need a custom hard acrylic bite plate. The sports mouth guards are usually made up of a rubbery material, and they tend to give way when you bite into them, which means you technically still continue to grind and in some cases they tend to make the grinding worse.

I think it's kind of strange the thing my dentist made me seems to be made of rubber and I paid 400.00 for a piece of rubber

Dentists have the know how to get a better perfect fit and mold it better than most DIY things you can think to do. It's like getwa custom earphone fitting.

It should have a hard biting surface, and preferable a soft inner surface. Sometimes they are hard on both inner and outer surfaces.
They should NOT have a soft biting surface, esp from a dentist. You will only get soft outer surface guards from stores or online.
A hard outer surface will allow balanced points for your teeth to touch (like having 4 wheels on a car), and be able to take quite a lot of chewing forces.
