Are you a senior or approaching age of seniority? Have you thought about how long you will live and how you are going to be prepared for it? Yes, investing and retirement planning are great, but did you know there are things you can do to ‘invest’ in longevity, and ensure great oral and general health?

The Oral Longevity resources —comprising a brochure, a DVD and a set of Q&As—are all available online. They are the result of a three-year collaboration between the American Dental Association (ADA), the ADA Foundation and GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare, launched with the objective of enhancing and preserving the oral health of older Americans.

The brochure is available in both English and Spanish, in PDF format and covers topics such as:

Why your teeth are important
The mouth/body connection
Taking care of your teeth
Making smart choices
Visiting your dentists

The visiting your dentist section also discusses what you, as a senior, need to take to your dental checkup. This includes:

An up-to-date list of your medications including vitamin supplements
An up-to-date list of your medical conditions and allergies
Information about your health care providers, including all of your doctors and their phone numbers and your previous dentist (if applicable).
Information about your emergency contacts
Your dental insurance or Medicaid cards
Your dentures or partials, even if you don’t wear them

The DVD is available for online viewing at the ADA website. It covers the following in six chapters:

One: Welcome and Overview
Two: What to Expect as You Get Older
Three: How to Stay Healthy for a Lifetime
Four: How to Take Care of Yourself
Five: How to Help a Family Friend with Mouth Care
Six: How to Get More Information on Dentistry and Oral Healthcare

You can also request a DVD by calling 312-440-2500, Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm Central Time.

The Q&A will take you through the common topics of checkups, changing mouth, cavities and fluoride, mouth cancer, periodontal disease and dry mouth.

All the resources in the world are not enough if you do not follow a daily oral health routine in order to ensure a healthy long life.
