Dentist popped an abcess

I had a cleaning today and the dentist came in and was looking around in my mouth. He says I just popped a pimple in your mouth. It was 7mm deep. I'm gonna put you on antibiotics and your gonna need an implant. That was it. He didn't even clean it out or put a drain in. Is that normal

It is not always necessary to put in a drain. Dis he take an x-ray to confirm the origin of the abscess? Why was an extraction and an implant the only option given?
