Dental Problem

So, I've been with my dentist probably 25 years. I'm approaching 50 and have had a lot of dental work done in my teens.

Initially I had crowns, which eventually broke and I've now had a couple of bridges for 5 years. They're fine but I treat them with kid gloves and retrained myself to eat with my premolars & molars.

So, my first problem came about 5 years ago when I needed a crown removed and for a short period of time I had a denture which I could not get on with. It made my mouth sore and I suffered with oral thrush quite a lot. After some persuasion I managed to get my dentist to do a bridge on the NHS. (They initially refused to do it). They told me at the time that they were not prepared to do any further 'cosmetic' surgery.

I've had problems with an upper left tooth recently. It was root treated a long time ago (10 years +) and had a large filling in it. As I've had to change the way I eat, my molars & premolars work harder now and inevitably the filling has come out.

The dentist has now referred me to a specialist; they say that the root treatment has failed/is failing and that it will need to be done again, which they cannot do.

My question is... is this normal, OR is this my dentist refusing to do further treatment as previously suggested? Is this specialist treatment?

you're lucky they have referred you, as normally they will pull the tooth out on the nhs.
Private root canal....cost circa £1000
nhs root canal.........cost circa £60
they would be making a loss doing a RC on the nhs, and no one likes to make a loss.
