Chlorhexidine mouthwash such as Corsodyl - long-term use?

I've noticed on such mouthwash products that it should not be used for more than a month, unless advised to do so by a dentist or hygienist.

Can you cause damage to gums if used for an extended period or on alternate weeks for example?

Or is it just a case of potentially staining your teeth too much?

What if you're just applying the product in a certain area, rather than rinsing?

Thanks for any insights.

Extended Chlorhexidine use is prone to stain teeth. I recommend patients using it for one week, then take off one week, before using it again.
