Chipped root canal

Root canal done on lower left second premolar in 2021.

I was under the impression a crown had been placed but as seen in the x-ray below, it seems to actually be a large composite.

Side of tooth is slightly chipped and has lines running from, as seen in two pics here.

Is this something I need to worry about urgently?

After a root canal, a tooth, especially a premolar, is more prone to chipping or hairline cracks, particularly if it only has a large composite filling and not a crown. Crowns are usually recommended post-RCT to protect the tooth’s structure long-term.


That said, if the chip is minor and there’s no pain or sensitivity, it’s not usually an urgent emergency, but it’s still wise to get it checked soon to prevent worsening or fracture. Cracks can spread over time, and catching it early can mean a simpler solution (like a crown or protective overlay).

Hi, thanks for your detailed response. Based on appearance alone, do you think I'm ok to continue using (chewing on the tooth), or is it at imminent risk?
