Bump On Lateral Part Of Tongue

Hello,

I just went to my dentist for my 6 month cleaning. I never miss them and haven’t had cavities yet. I have had all my wisdom teeth out a long time ago. When they were doing the examination they asked me if I’d bitten my tongue recently. I told them I thought I might have. They then said they think I should go to an oral surgeon to be safe since it’s on the lateral side of the tongue. Of course when biopsy is as mentioned I’ve been really freaked out. I’ve scheduled my appointment but if someone would be willing to take a look at this I’d greatly appreciate it.

David

It does look like it might be trauma related. I would wait 2 weeks first. Rinse with salt water and check if it becomes smaller or disappears. If it does not disappear, then to be safe, rather have a biopsy. The lateral or side border of the tongue is a high risk area for potentially malignant disorders.

We always assume what the most common cause is. Most of the time it is trauma. Either due to biting yourself or due to a sharp edge on a tooth adjacent to the area. Only if it does not disappear, do we investigate further.
