Back tooth has been filled but has a crack in it , pain recently so been advised extraction only option any advice

I have a cracked tooth which has been filled, recently it started hurting again, I returned to the Dentist who advised an extraction was my only option

Do you have any x-rays? How deep does the crack extend? If the crack does not extend through the pulpal floor or into a root, then a root canal might be an option, with a crown afterwards.
