Are there any alternatives to Root Canal Work?

I had a cracked filling. When the filling was repaired it was discovered that the decay under it was deep into the canal. The tooth was not drilled into the canal.

There is now a temporary filling on the tooth. I have no symptoms.

Is root canal the only option to save the tooth?
