10 year + Root canal issue

I had a root canal and tooth number 14 approximately 10 years ago and recently I’ve noticed I’m having pain around the tooth and the gums feel very sore. I’ve had a somewhat recent abscess in that tooth and when I press down it feels a little spongy. There’s also a weird taste Around that tooth. I went to the endodontist and he stated it might be my gums. I’m wondering if it could be the tooth that needs extracted or if there’s an issue with the crown as it seems like I can see part of the tooth but I’m not sure. The endodontist did do a scan and said there is some bone loss from a previous infection. I’m not sure if I should go for a retreat, if it’s an issue with the crown, or if I should just get it extracted.

Do you have an x-ray to share? It definitely looks like there is something going on with that tooth. If you have a failed root canal and bone loss, then it might be a better idea to think long term, have it extracted and replaced with an implant or other alternative.

Here is an xray, however, the bone loss was noticeable on the CT imagine the endodontist did which I only have a copy on a CD. I was thinking about extraction and implant as well. I just don’t want to keep putting money into a tooth that will end up extracted in the end anyways.

There is secondary decay present below the crown, which extends into the root. I think the safer option would be to consider an extraction and implant. This will be the better long term solution.
