Years of adolescence presents unique issues and challenges to maintaining oral health. In recognizing this, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) periodically issues guidelines to Pediatric Dentists on managing these unique issues and needs.

Adolescence, the period between 10 and 18, requires special attention by the pediatric dentists due to a number of factors:

Adolescence brings with it a potentially high caries rate;Adolescents are at increased risk for traumatic injury and gum disease;Youth displays a tendency towards poor nutritional habits; This age group displays an increased interest and awareness about appearances both about themselves and others; It may be necessary to provide combined orthodontic and restorative care; Dental phobia is a common issue;Adolescents may begin experimenting with tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs;Pregnancy should be factored into any treatments or procedures that may be necessary; Eating disorders too may have to be dealt with;The group presents unique social and psychological needs that need to be considered before provision of oral and dental health services;

These are just the unique aspects of adolescence that pediatric dentists will consider in providing treatment to their youthful patients.

But pediatric dentists alone cannot be responsible for a great smile.
