Several weeks after having root canals on two premolars, I noticed that
if I tapped on them with my fingernail, mild pain was produced. This
was attributed to tissue damage from an infection that was raging near
the root ends. I was told that the damage would need an unspecified
amount of time to heal.

Now, over a year later, tapping still produces mild pain. I think my
threshold of pain has been lowered in most of the other teeth in that
quadrant, too.

What the hell is going on here?

Stop tapping on the teeth, you are creating micro-trauma.
