Uniquely Broken Tooth

An extremely weird thing happened recently.

My Lower Left 8 wisdom tooth, which had been suffering a bit of a
battering, with some cracks in the edges, developed during the
afternoon a sharp edge which concerned me a bit with regard to
injuring my tongue.

Later, during the evening, I had a strange awareness of the tooth and
took it between my fingers and gave it a bit of a waggle. To my
astonishment, almost the whole tooth came away in my fingers!

More than that, though, is that there is still an entirety of tooth
surface remaining, just above the level of the gum, with raised edges
around it.

I therefore have what appears to be an almost whole tooth that appears
to have been cut away from the root and below-gum structure. It is
almost wholly a normal off-white colour and does not show significant
signs of decay in terms of colour.

I am therefore at an absolute loss as to what caused this. There has
been little or no sensitivity issue with this tooth and this injury
did not hurt.

Please advise as to what may have caused this and whether it is a
common injury. Remote technology, perhaps??? Or something more
normal...?

I have kept the fragment and it is approximately 11mm by 7mm in area
and about 6mm deep.

That happened to me too, did you have a really nasty taste in your
mouth? I had to have mine extracted.
